Understanding Primitive Reflexes: Building the Foundation for Your Child's Development

At The Thrive Spot, we believe in empowering parents with knowledge about their child's developmental journey. One of the areas we feel strongly about is PRIMITIVE REFLEXES!

Primitive reflexes, those automatic responses present at birth, play a crucial role in your child's early development. These reflexes, such as the Moro (startle) reflex and the rooting reflex, help newborns with survival skills like feeding and protection.

As your child grows, these reflexes should integrate, paving the way for more complex movements and behaviours.

But sometimes, these reflexes do not integrate and if primitive reflexes persist beyond their typical integration period, they may impact your child's development, affecting motor skills, coordination, and even emotional regulation.

Some of the key primitive reflexes our team look at are:

1. Moro Reflex: Helps in response to sudden stimuli.

2. Rooting Reflex: Assists in finding food sources.

3. Palmar Grasp Reflex: Aids in grasping objects.

4. Babinski Reflex: Prepares the feet for walking.

Each different reflex (when not integrated) will present different effects in children as they grow. From emotional regulation difficulties, to sitting still in chairs, poor focus or toileting dramas, it is important to investigate whether reflexes are playing a role in these difficulties.

At The Thrive Spot, our multidisciplinary team, including paediatric chiropractor and occupational therapist, are equipped to assess and support the integration of these reflexes.

Stay tuned for more insights and tips on how we can support your child's growth!
